Simutronics built its early reputation on role-playing multi-user dungeon (MUD) games, currently hosted on our Play.net site. Based on Simutronics' proprietary Interactive Fiction Engine (IFE), these games provide a dynamic, ever-changing world directly impacted by players and their actions. The most popular of these games is GemStone IV, launched in 1989, which holds the title of the longest-running multiplayer game in the world. Players assume the role of a variety of races and professions and participate in combat, trading and other activities in an array of different settings in the mythical world of Elanthia. The game's enthusiastic players continue to support an active online community with dozens of websites and player gatherings across the U.S.

DragonRealms, a future setting of GemStone IV, also set in Elanthia, boasts a large community of active players and was recently praised by Massively for its depth and personality. The Platinum versions of both GemStone IV and DragonRealms offer some of the most robust role-playing experiences available; alternatively GemStone Shattered and DragonRealms Fallen offer unrestricted PvP encounters.
